Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The most amazing thing about SEO is that it allows your customers to find you WHEN they are looking for you. In social media, blogs, or most other forms of marketing, YOU are putting information out there in hopes of a potential customer seeing that information and wanting your service. SEO changes this paradigm. In this case, the customer is LOOKING FOR YOU, when they want you.

What is SEO?

Essentially, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of improving the position that your website appears at in the "organic" search results returned by sites such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. It is the process of making your site and the site's individual pages and articles relevant to both search engines, and thereby search engine users.

Let's assume you own a Thai Restaurant in downtown Phoenix. If someone goes to Google and types in "Where should I go for Thai food in Phoenix," you want your restaurant to appear near the top of the search results!

To do this, there are a few important factors to consider:

Keywords

Search engines use "spiders" which are programs that browse through websites to identify the actual copy written on the page along with things like use of keywords and phrases. This data is then used to determine the relevance of your site when someone enters a keyword or phrase into Google, Bing, Yahoo or any other search engine. The more relevant the keywords and phrases are, the better the ranking.

In the above example, there are a few keywords: "Thai," "food" and "Phoenix." Search engines will use spiders to comb through websites and, using their own unique algorithms, will determine how relevant any particular website is relative to these keywords.

Links

Search engines are constantly searching for relevance to keywords. Part of this is by looking at links pointing back to your webpage. The more links, the more quickly search engines will find, index and rank you. Links also help you to establish value and authority. Search engines are like popularity contests. If you are the popular kid in school, all the kids will be talking about you. The same applies to the internet. If you are a good Thai Restaurant, different restaurant review sites, social media platforms and blogs will mention and link to you. The more links, the more value search engines find in you.

Timing

Our world today changes quickly and by the second. Search engines know this. Therefore, they consider timeliness in their searches. It's not fair for your Thai Restaurant to be ranked against a Thai Restaurant that closed 10 years ago! This is where blogging and social media come into play. Blogs allow you to utilize keywords and write about your subject often, thereby letting search engines know that you are very relevant today.

Of course, there is much more to SEO than this quick summary, but this should give you a very basic idea of what search engine optimization is about. Contact us, to find out how we can help you.
